Life Without Oxygen: Species That Break the Rules of Biology
Most plants and other living creatures need oxygen to survive, but some tiny organisms can live without it. They are called extremophiles because they can flourish in harsh environments. Some microorganisms live deep under the ocean. Others live in hot springs, underground, or in very salty water. Plants can live in places that seem extremely hot, cold, dark, or toxic to life. This amazing ability to survive can be very different from what the scientists expect. Survival without oxygen can also help us imagine what life might be like on other planets.
