26 July UNESCO - International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

Iriomote (西表) Island is located in the most southern part of Okinawa. Seven species of plants grow in mangrove forests there. Since the environment is limited to saline water, mangroves develop a special root system called pneumatophores, or breathing roots. They differ from the supporting roots (silt roots) in the way that they grow above the water level and take up the atmospheric oxygen through the pores.
西表島は沖縄県の最南端に位置しています。島のマングローブ林には7種類の植物が生育しています。その環境は汽水に限られているので、マングローブ林の植物は呼吸根という特異な構造を発達させています。呼吸根は支柱根とは異なって、水位よりも上方に成長し、孔を通して空気中の酸素を取り込みます。

ルールは簡単。五・七・五、季語はなくてもよいけれど、生物学かその月の話題に関連した句であること、そして英語で詠むことです。

IKEBANA

Even though my great-grandmother was familiar with Ikebana, I prefer photography as one of my hobbies. This picture was taken in March this year during my trip to Okinawa to observe the ecosystem of the Iriomote Island. The participants were from Hokkaido University, Kyoto University, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and of course, TMU. Would you like to explore the southern part of Japan with its abundance of vegetation?
私の曾祖母は華道をしていましたが、私は写真を撮ることのほうが好きです。この写真は今年の三月に、他大学（北海道大学、京都大学、東京海洋大学、東京農業工業大学、そして東京都立大学）の友達と西表島に自然観察をしに行ったときに撮りました。植生が豊かな日本の南側を訪ねてみませんか？
