Biology and Art - July 2024

MESSAGE

26 July UNESCO – International Day for the Conservation of the Ecosystems

The ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with non-living components of their environment, where water provides the lifeblood of the community. It is a temporary home to animals and plants. Being the most essential nutrient, people, animals, and plants need water to survive.

I grew up in a land-locked city, but after coming to Japan, I got a chance to visit Miyagase Lake. The beauty of this lake and its surroundings reminded me of the simple yet profound joys that nature offers. It was an experience that left me feeling refreshed, inspired, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to witness such a serene and beautiful part of our planet. Ecosystems are marvelous.

生態系とは、環境の非生物的構成要素と相互作用する生物の共同体であり、水はその共同体の生命維持の源です。水は動物や植物の住処です。最も不可欠な構成要素である水は、人間、動物、植物が生きていくために必要なものです。

私は海や湖のない場所で育ったけれど、日本に来てから宮ヶ瀬湖を訪れる機会を得ました。この湖とその周辺の美しさは、自然が与えてくれるシンプルでありながら奥深い喜びを私に思い出させてくれました。このような穏やかで美しい地球の一部を目の当たりにできたことに、私はリフレッシュし、刺激を受け、深く感謝しました。生態系は素晴らしい。

still lake mirrors sky,
life thrives under gentle waves—
ecosystems bloom
静かな湖は空を映す、
穏やかな波の下で生命が躍動し
生態系は花開く。
