Biology and Art - May

22 May UNESCO – International Day for Biological Diversity
At TMU, many students are from various countries – that’s diversity. We have different laboratories to study specific branches of biology – that’s diversity. You may speak Japanese, English, perhaps, Korean, Chinese, Sinhala, or Indonesian – would that be diversity? If you don’t know, the word ‘diverse’ comes from Latin diversus, meaning “turned different ways.”
多様性とはなんでしょう？例えば、TMUにさまざまな国から学生が集まっていること。例えば、 生物学にも色々な分野があり、それらに特化したたくさんの研究所があること。あなたの話す言語が、日本語だったり、英語だったり、韓国語、中国語、シンハラ語、それともインドネシア語 – それも多様性ですね？ そういえば、「多様」という言葉はラテン語のdiversus (「さまざまな方向に向いた」という意味）に由来するそうですよ。

HAIKU
The rules are simple: 5-7-5, there is no seasonal reference word (a kigo), but your poem must relate to either biology or the topic of the month, and you are writing in English.
ルールは簡単。五・七・五、季語はなくてもよいけれど、生物学かその月の話題に関連した句であること、そして英語で詠むことです。

There are about 32,000 living fish species in the world – that’s diversity! We eat them, and some of them (e.g., piranha) eat us. Homo sapiens is also heterogeneous. That includes biology, psychology, and social structures. If the fish in that “rotation-sushi” restaurant were alive, how would they imagine us, humans? 世界には現在約32,000種の魚がいます。まさに多様性ですね！ 私たちはそれらのお魚を食べますが、お魚に食べられちゃうこともありますね（ピラニアとかね）。 ホモサピエンスも多様です。生物学、心理学、社会構造など、色々な点で不均一ですね。回転寿司で回っている魚たちが生きていたら、私たち人間の暮らしをどのように想像するのでしょうね。エリザベスの多様性について、俳句を読んで、私に送ってください（eliedutm@tmu.ac.jp）。

IKEBANA
A bouquet has mixed flowers, but ikebana may have none, depending on the school. Morimono arrangements contain fruits or vegetables and flowers. I create ikebana arrangements, how about you? Can you share with us your artistic talents? Challenge yourself in science and art to develop, grow, become stronger, and produce better offspring when you are ready.
花束は何種類もの花を合わせたものですが、生花はいろいろです。生花の流派によっては花がない場合もありますよ。 「盛物」のアレンジメントは、果物や野菜と花を組み合わせます。 私は新しい生け花のアレンジを作るのが好き、あなたはどうですか？ あなたの芸術的才能をシェアしてくれませんか？科学と芸術に挑戦して成長して強くなり、時が来たらより良い成果を生み出してしてください。
