Biology and Art - August 2023

This month’s contribution comes from the first-year master’s student, Iori Kato, studying Molecular Neuroscience. Iori is interested in watching movies and listening to music, especially K-pop.

12 August UNESCO – International Youth Day

Young people are said to have immense potential. Although I believe it is true now, I had not realized it and wasted some precious time. Thanks to the progress of technology, there are plenty of choices around us, which sometimes make us puzzled. Nevertheless, we must carefully select what interests us and what we genuinely desire, and we must be passionate about that, not waste our potential.

若者は可能性の塊だとよく言われる。今ではその通りだと思うが、それに気付かずに貴重な時間を無駄にしてしまったこともあった。テクノロジーの発展により私たちの周りには数多くの選択肢があり、時にはそれに惑わされることもある。それでも、可能性を無駄にしないために、私たちが何に興味があり、何を本当に望むのかを慎重に考え、それに向かって情熱を燃やすべきである。

HAIKU
The rules are simple: 5-7-5, there is no seasonal reference word (a kigo), but your poem must relate to either biology or the topic of the month, and you are writing in English.
ルールは簡単。五・七・五、季語はなくてもよいけれど、生物学かその月の話題に関連した句であること、そして英語で詠むことです。Therefore, Iori’s haiku for this month is:

Eat watermelon;
you’ll know what beetles dream of.
The first step of research.
スイカを食べれば
カブトムシの気持ちがわかるはずだ
研究の第一歩である
