Biology and Art - April 2023

This month’s contribution comes from the second-year master’s student, Nanako Takasugi studying molecular neuroscience. Nanako is interested in cheer dance and watching TV dramas.

[22 April UNESCO – Earth Day]
These days, the earth is facing many environmental problems, such as global warming, air pollution, and increasing CO₂ emissions. Some animals have become extinct due to these problems, which has also affected the ecosystem. We must never let these problems become someone else’s problems. In order to realize a sustainable society, it is necessary to be aware of environmental issues. I am aware of separating trash and turning off lights frequently. We should protect our earth by doing what we can.

The rules are simple: 5-7-5, there is no seasonal reference word (a kigo), but your poem must relate to either biology or the topic of the month, and you are writing in English.
Therefore, Nanako’s haiku for this month is:

the earth has riches
we need to sustain our life
things are limited

WORDS to learn this month are: global warming (地球温暖化), air pollution (大気汚染), to extinct (絶滅), sustainable society (持続可能な社会)
