Biology and Art - March 2024

This month’s contribution comes from a master’s student, Mioka Toda, who is studying the Taxonomy of Animals. Mioka plays tennis and is interested in music (acoustic guitar, piano).

3 March UNESCO – World Wildlife Day

Climate change influences the number of wildlife species around the world. In Japan, the population of Iriomote wild cat is critically endangered, but the government is trying to save the species by establishing the Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center in Okinawa. Unfortunately, the wolves were not so lucky. The population of Hokkaido wolves died around 1945. To stop that, we must look more creatively around us and stop buying things we do not need, which will allow the government to redirect resources towards conservation. Let’s do that together, ok?
気候変動は世界中の野生動物の種数に影響を与える。日本ではイリオモテヤマネコの個体数が絶滅の危機に瀕しているが、政府は沖縄に西表野生生物保護センターを設置し、種の保存に努めている。残念ながら、オオカミはそれほど恵まれていなかった。エゾオオカミの集団は1945年頃に絶滅してしまった。このような事態を食い止めるためには、私たちの身の回りにもっと創造的な視点を持ち、必要のないものを手に入れるのをやめなければならない。そうすれば、政府は資源を自然保護に回すことができる。

Many legs in sync;
millipedes dance with mushrooms.
Conservation bliss.
